Keeping A Senior Dog Comfy

May 1 2022

Our canine companions have many special talents. One of our favorites is the fact that they somehow manage to get even cuter as they age. Fido usually becomes super sweet and lovable in his golden years! Your pooch will probably spend his retirement napping and begging for treats and belly rubs. You should by all means indulge him, and perhaps pamper him a bit. Of course, when it comes to senior dog care, comfort is king. A Sherman Oaks, CA veterinarian offers some tips on this below.

Beds

Fido may spend as much as half of his time sleeping. One of the best things you can do for him is make sure he has a comfy doggy bed. Or two. Or three. It’s always good to have options!

Grooming

Keeping Fido’s coat clean and free of dust and tangles will not only make him look nice, but will also help keep him comfortable. Nail trims and dental care are also very important!

Exercise

Older dogs can get very stiff and sore, particularly if they are afflicted with issues such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. Fido will still need some exercise, though, even if it’s just a daily walk. He may also benefit from pet ramps or stairs. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Climate Control

As Fido ages, he’ll get cold more easily in winter, and will overheat more quickly in summer. Make sure he always has access to rooms with climate control.

Diet

Senior pets are often expert beggars. Don’t let that furry face fool you! It’s very easy for older dogs to get pudgy. Those additional pounds will put extra strain on Fido’s body, and make it harder for him to stay active.

Your four-legged friend may also benefit from certain supplements. Glucosamine, for example, can be very beneficial for arthritic pets. Omega 3 and omega 6 fish oils can also be helpful. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.

Veterinary Care

Fido will probably need to come in a bit more often, especially if he develops health issues. Look into alternative therapies and/or homeopathic veterinary care. Things like acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be wonderful for older dogs, as they are very safe and gentle. Ask your vet for more information.
