Creating A Catio

May 14 2022

Did you know that one of the best things you can do for your cat is to keep her safe and sound indoors? Fluffy is very small, and is vulnerable to threats posed by cars, weathers, and predators. Of course, she will enjoy having a taste of nature. Why not make her a catio? A Sherman Oaks, CA vet offers some advice on creating one in this article.

Choosing The Spot

First and foremost, you’ll need to pick the right spot for Fluffy’s catio. Screened porches or enclosed patios are of course purrfect, but you can just use a sunny corner.

Enclosures

If you really want to please your feline overlord, and you have the room, you may want to consider building her an enclosure. Some of these are very simple structures that Fluffy can get in and out of through a window. Of course, if you’re feeling more motivated, you can also make something more complex.

Furniture

Once you have the right spot picked out, the next thing is for you to add some pet furniture. This is a great spot for a cat tower, which would provide your furball a napping spot, vantage point, and nail care station. Fluffy also wants comfy beds and, of course, the occasional cardboard box.

Window View

Kitties love lounging around and watching birds and squirrels. If possible, include a window seat with a good view of a bird bath or bird feeder. Fluffy may spend hours sunbathing and watching the action!

Plants

A catio is also a wonderful spot for plants. These not only make your home look inviting, they also help filter the air. Just stick with ones that are safe for your feline buddy. Boston ferns and Spider plants are good options for green houseplants. If you want something more colorful, you can include African violets or roses. Many types of orchid are also safe. Got a brown thumb? Go for something hardy, like a rubber tree. You can also incorporate many culinary herbs. Check the ASPCA site here for more information.

Bonus Purrs

An old litterbox can make a great garden bed for Fluffy. Plant some wheat grass in it, and your furry friend will soon have her very own kitty lawn. A catwalk is another option. Many catslove heights!
