Laser Therapy For Pets

September 1 2021

Did you know that laser therapy is becoming very popular in the world of veterinary medicine? There’s a good reason for this: it’s a wonderful, low risk treatment that can successfully be used to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. A local Sherman Oaks, CA vet offers some information on this amazing treatment in this article.

Basics

The term Laser is actually an acronym; it stands for Light Amplification By Stimulated Emission Of Radiation. Laser lights change the body’s cellular chemistry, via a process called photobiostimulation. Those light waves stimulate the body’s cells. This triggers several reactions, including protein synthesis and cell metabolism. It also causes the body to release natural painkilling hormones called endorphins. This in turn reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and helps restore metabolic function.

Uses

Laser therapy has helped many of our adorable patients feel better. Some of the medical issues laser therapy is used for in the veterinary world include muscle, ligament, and tendon injuries; wounds; hot spots; degenerative disc disease; ear infections; strains and sprains; and inflammation. The treatment is also helpful in facilitating healing after surgery. Ask your vet for more information.

Benefits

Laser therapy offers some wonderful benefits. First and foremost? There are no known side effects. Laser therapy treatments also do not require any anesthesia. Your pet will not have to be shaved, and they won’t need any medication. Another benefit is that laser treatment sessions are very short, usually under 30 minutes. This makes them easy for busy pet owners to fit into packed schedules. Treatments can be repeated as needed, which often results in continued improvement. Your furry best buddy won’t need any aftercare, aside from maybe a good nap and some extra cuddles. Of course, the best thing about laser treatments is the fact that they work! Some pets show clear improvement in as little as 12 hours after treatment.

Tips

Laser therapy is wonderful, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be the best option for all of our patients. Treatment is always offered on a case-by-case basis, after a pet has been thoroughly diagnosed. That said, it’s never a bad idea to learn more, and/or explore different options. If you think that your four-legged friend may benefit, reach out to your vet.
